Introducing CMIA, our conference partner
1) Who is the CMIA?
Carbon Markets & Investors Association (CMIA) is an international trade association representing financial institutions and other service providers to the global carbon market. CMIA was created to ensure the progressive business voice is heard - market-friendly climate change policy creating new business opportunities. CMIA member companies provide highly-skilled jobs and added value to the economy through services to the growing market for the reduction of carbon emissions. Our international membership accounts for an estimated three quarters of the transaction value in the global carbon market, expected to be worth more than $100 billion in 2008, and expected to grow to an estimated 1 trillion USD by 2020.
2) What is CMIA's point of differentiation from other associations?
CMIA is differentiated in many ways. First, our association represents carbon finance and service provider organizations only so our views are completely aligned with the challenge of reducing carbon emissions. Second, our members believe that market based mechanisms are the most efficient means of addressing climate change. Third, we have a strong policy focus on critical climate change issues through an investment and project development lens which is channeled through our nine working groups on:
- Post-2012 international policy
- North American policy
- Carbon market oversight
- Forestry and land use
- Voluntary carbon markets,
- Taxation and accounting,
- Aviation and maritime emissions,
- European Union policy, and
- Project-based flexibility mechanisms (carbon offsets)
Through our output from these working groups, which are constituted by some of the best thinkers and practitioners in the carbon industry, CMIA engages from a position of experience with policy-makers in the US, Europe and Asia on how the market can deliver emissions reductions at least cost to national economies.
3) Why is the CMIA entering the US market?
The US represents one of the most critical elements that have been missing from moving our economies towards a low carbon future. CMIA recognizes this and is dedicated to working with policy makers, regulators, non-governmental organizations and other business associations to develop the consensus policies that will bring effective legislation into the US. CMIA is already firmly established in the US market through active membership of name-brand US financial institutions such as JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch as well as notable US law firms such as Skadden Arps and Akin Gump. We also have a history at CMIA of dialogue including in-person briefings for senior US lawmakers from Capitol Hill and State Governments. For example, in the week following the US Presidential election, more than 16 senior Congressional staffers are scheduled to meet with CMIA to discuss international aspects of climate change policy with our experts in London in an event organized with Climate Change Capital. That's a good sign of how sought after the CMIA opinion is on climate change policy and global carbon market developments. It is also notable that our views on forestry market policy are sought by governments around the world including most recently at the launch at Number 10 Downing Street of the landmark Eliasch Review on Forestry Finance.
4) CMIA's view of the US market?
From the business perspective of our members, the arrival of a US cap and trade federal market will be a much larger opportunity than Europe's (ETS) cap and trade system by as much as 3 to 1, therefore it is vitally important for our members that CMIA is able to influence debate on the design aspects of the US carbon markets at a regional and a federal level so that these markets function efficiently and produce incentives and market certainty for investors as well as cost-savings for the US taxpayer. These are difficult days for markets but we take the view that the carbon crunch is a multi-generational challenge that will outlast the credit crunch. We are confident that global markets will in the end show resilience and the ability to adapt to new trading environments and assets classes and no country is better equipped than America to adapt to change in a fast-moving world. During these tense times in the international markets, we urge policymakers to recognize that market-based policies will deliver greater emissions reductions at a substantially lower price than command and control regulation. Flexible market mechanisms that leave the decision about how best to achieve emissions reductions in the hands of the emitters themselves will ensure that the most economically efficient abatement options will be chosen.
5) CMIA's goal for Carbon TradeEx America?
Our goal is for this event to become the premiere US carbon trading event and to bolster CMIA's mission objective of combating climate change through the creation of a global carbon market. In particular, we believe that it is important for the event to engage the low-carbon technology community and demonstrate the practical economic benefits that are already accruing to the U.S. economy. This year it will be held in Washington DC to explore the opportunities presented by a new administration as the new President starts to grapple with detailed policy objectives and to appoint key staff. We will be creating a vibrant and informative event that addresses US economic and energy issues as well as providing exciting carbon business opportunities. We will be extending invitations to key US policy makers who really can make a difference on climate change. CMIA is determined to create an event with positive policy outcomes that doesn't simply contribute to more hot air in our already polluted atmosphere! That's why the work of our nine policy working groups will form the backbone of our event-planning. In the end, we want people to walk away having enjoyed themselves, learned some critical insights from market practitioners and policymakers, and done good business with new partners in one of the fastest growing markets.
