DNV launches Climate Change Academy

DNV calls for a strategic response to the shortage of competence and skills in climate change and launches a Climate Change Academy.

The shortage of competence and skills in climate change is one of the major bottlenecks limiting success for companies operating in the fast growing carbon business. DNV today announced the launch of a Climate Change Academy in the Middle East, aimed at addressing this issue.

The focus on renewables and carbon markets worldwide is becoming more important than ever before. Millions of dollars are being invested globally, both by private companies and Governments. However, growth in this area is being severely hampered by the shortage of competent people. Companies and institutions aiming to make a difference and to position themselves in the carbon market are struggling to find, develop and retain the competence and knowledge they need to implement their strategies.

DNV recognises the competence deficit as a key barrier in developing businesses and institutions that work in the renewables and carbon markets and, in advance of the World Future Energy Summit, is calling for a strategic response to this challenge. Given the Middle East’s key role in the energy sector, and its emerging role in renewable energy and carbon trading, DNV is launching a Climate Change Academy in the region. To support the Academy, DNV will have a team of roving “Climate Change experts” who will drive the development of the Academy and Network.

As Calls for CDM Reform Intensify, The Gold Standard Amplifies Project Assistance and Certification Capacity in Key Developing Countries

As Calls for CDM Reform Intensify, The Gold Standard Amplifies Project Assistance andCertification Capacity in Key Developing Countries The world’s premium certification standard for carbon offset projects, “The Gold Standard” said it willdouble its efforts to support renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in key developing country markets starting January 2009.

During the first two weeks of December, delegates from 190 nations are convening in Poznan, Poland to negotiate a new treaty for mitigating climate change. Key issues include defining means for developing countries to help curb climate change. With the support of the Federal German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, The Gold Standard Foundation now offers developing countries with rapidly growing energy needs free assistance through its global “Local Expert” program. In addition, The Gold Standard will increase staff to reduce certification periods.

The Gold Standard Foundation plans to hire experts in seven developing countries encompassing the most dynamic energy markets, including China, India and Brazil. These experts will support projectdevelopers in the application of the Gold Standard’s rules and serve as readily accessible information hubs for national authorities, non-governmental organisations and auditors reviewing projects. Michael Schlup, Director of the Gold Standard Foundation remarked, “The only true barrier to sustainable development through renewable energy and energy efficiency projects is human capacity – both on the development side and the certification side. The speed at which we can bring deserving projects to market will increase, bringing much relief to all market players.”

Carbon Market Event Venue's Green Initiatives-Washington DC Convention Center

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center management and staff recognize that its services and activities have a direct effect on the local, regional, and global environment. Our aim is to manage responsibly to protect the environment and for the promotion of understanding sustainability in the broad context. We are committed to maximizing operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts.

Environmentally Responsible Procurement

We explore quality and environmentally responsible products for use in various areas within our operation and require our service providers to purchase post consumer recycled products. Some of the products used in our programs include the following:

• 100% SCA post consumer paper disposables and Green Seal certified Cojo foam hand soap used in all restrooms.

• 30% post consumer, acid-free, paper used in all copy rooms.

• Ecolab one of our environmentally preferred vendors, provides cleaning and sanitizing products to our foodservice and housekeeping service partners.

Carbon Footprint/Air Quality

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) or Metro, located directly at the Convention Center offers ready access to travel within the city, as well as, throughout Maryland and Virginia.

• The Center provides "Metrochecks", a transit benefit to all employees for daily commute on Metrorail and Metrobus.

• The DC Circulator, a frequent bus service operating in the heart of the District of Columbia, is a convenient and affordable method of transportation serving downtown hotels, major area attractions, and special events in the area.

• Bicycle racks are available for guests and staff.

Water Conservation

Our principle is "every drop counts" and by using water more efficiently we can reduce additional stress on water supplies and distribution systems:

 • The building’s infrastructure supports storm water management. The extensive roof system feeds rain water into twelve (12) large underground collection tanks around the property. The tanks collect, filter and then releases rain water into the District of Columbia’s storm system at a considerably reduced rate, thus, decreasing peak demand on the water system and improving the operation of its waste treatment plant.

 • All sinks and water fountains provide filtered water.

 • All restrooms have infra-red flush, low-flow urinals, and faucet sensors.
