CARBON TRADEEX AMERICA BROADENING ITS BASE TO ADDRESS THE ENTIRE ENVIRONMENTAL MARKETS PORTFOLIO
Koelnmesse, Inc., the Carbon Markets & Investors Association (CMIA) and the Environmental Markets Association (EMA) for Carbon TradeEx America today announced details of their conference program. The tradeshow and conference will take place from September 28-29, 2010 at the McCormick Center in Chicago. The main pillars of the program are titled “Emerging Opportunities”, “Marketplace Insights” and “Business Strategies”.
The tradeshow and conference is designed as a “hands on” program for professionals in environmental management positions working on strategic planning and investing, energy efficiency improvements, compliance programs, performance benchmarking and market and finance monitoring. The inclusion of EMA into this event has broadened the platform for this event as it now addresses not only Carbon but all environmental markets including SO2, NOx, RECs and GHG.
“Emerging Opportunities” will focus on subjects such as investment risk in climate change, success stories in voluntary offsets projects, the correct use of market standards, dos and don’ts in energy trading and an insight how renewables match against other energy sources. “Market Insight” will examine the role of forestry and agricultural offsets, provide an outlook on the NAFTA offsetting scheme and will provide insights into current business opportunities in existing environmental markets. “Business Strategies”, a new conference track added for the first time, will examine strategies of the transport sector, the effects of Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR) replacement rule, EPA newest proposals on regulating GHG, SO2 and NOx emissions and the impact of the RPS on the renewable industry.
“We are excited to be a sponsor of CarbonTradeEx this year as it is the national event for environmental markets. The strong business orientation of this event, the move to Chicago, and partnership with the Environmental Markets Association are all positive improvements to an already excellent event which we strongly support“ - Allison Wood, Partner, Hunton & Williams

Senate Global Warming Bill on Track
Six months after introducing a sweeping climate change bill that flopped in the Senate, Democrat John Kerry (left) is preparing to offer a compromise measure that seeks to reel in reluctant senators. Kerry, collaborating with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and independent Senator Joseph Lieberman, might introduce a new bill promoting clean energy early next week, just days before the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, environmental sources said. ...
"Senators Kerry, Graham, and Lieberman will unveil their proposal later this month," Kerry spokeswoman Whitney Smith said, adding Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was "committed to making this Congress the one that finally passes comprehensive energy and climate legislation." - Reuters

CER recycling will damage credibility of EU member states and depress CER and EUA prices

The Carbon Markets and Investors Association (CMIA) calls on all European Member States that are committed to addressing climate change to refrain from selling Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) that have been surrendered to them by installations under the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) for compliance.
The association points out that there is a fundamental environmental contradiction in Member States insisting that installations under the EU ETS only be allowed to use CERs or Emission Reduction Units (ERUs) due to environmental concerns surrounding Assigned Amount Units (AAUs), and selling the very CERs and ERUs that were handed to them in good faith to replace them with AAUs for the purpose of national compliance under the Kyoto Protocol.
Miles Austin, Director of CMIA said: “Any country engaging in this activity can have no credible claim to leadership in action on climate change. The environmental integrity of the EU ETS and of Member States' compliance with the Kyoto Protocol is being put at risk.”
