Edelman and Koelnmesse, Inc. Collaborate to Raise Awareness of the Investment Opportunities in a Carbon-Constrained World
Edelman, the world's largest independent communications agency, and Koelnmesse, Inc., a world-leading trade fair organizer, announce a strategic partnership today supporting the Carbon TradeEx America (Sept. 28-29, 2010), the most comprehensive event in the U.S. connecting climate policy, carbon markets, energy security, and low carbon technology.
The partnership will aim to help raise awareness and communicate three important measures around carbon:
1. Carbon management is an integral component of a company’s overall sustainability and business strategy. Investing in environmental reduction is a way to reduce costs, redeploy liquidity and capital to lower risk investments, build a low carbon economy, support fiscal expansion and drive growth.
2. Companies cannot choose between shareholder return and responsible conduct; nor argue over pursuing sustainability strategies versus maximum competitiveness. All are required to drive innovation, future growth and success.
3. Carbon is moving from a technical burden to strategic business opportunity. It can create jobs, spur new technologies and spark innovation. Businesses need to manage and mitigate the risks and costs surrounding carbon now, before it is regulated.
"One thing is certain: carbon is no longer just a matter of managing reputations—it is a matter of managing costs and risk as well as creating business opportunities" said Jane Madden, senior vice president of CSR and sustainability, Edelman.
"Bringing the various business, policy and NGO actors together to share insights, network and create opportunities is how we are going to advance policy, technologies, investments and innovations around the carbon markets," said Mette Petersen, president & managing director, Koelnmessse, Inc.
"Across the globe, more and more policies are put in place to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy. In its wake, companies are faced with previously unknown risks, but also with a wealth of new opportunities" said Milo Sjardin, manager head of U.S. analysis for Bloomberg New Energy Finance. "Carbon TradeEx America will explore these issues in great depth and provide the latest views of investors and strategists in the market."

International offsets: A critical tool for the US market
Hosted by : Gold Standard, VCS, CAR and DOE
Although international offsets may help provide a cost effective solution for US emitters to meet their emissions reduction targets, US legislators have often taken a somewhat skeptical view on the role of international offsets for achieving US emission reduction targets. Past proposals for domestic climate legislation have allowed the use of 2 billion offsets, but according to many market reports these volumes will not be reached without the inclusion of international offsets. Indeed, participants in the US voluntary carbon market are already using domestic and international offsets to significantly reduce their emissions. The panel at this side event, comprised of the foremost carbon offset standards, the leading trade organization in the voluntary carbon market and a renowned verifier, will consider the value and benefits of international offsets. The panel will discuss the concerns surrounding international offsets and how these concerns can be resolved.
