Collaboration with suppliers and environmental experts leads to development, measurement and independent assessment of carbon reductions

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Feb. 25, 2010 – Walmart today announced a goal to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its global supply chain by the end of 2015. This represents one and a half times the company's estimated global carbon footprint growth over the next five years and is the equivalent of taking more than 3.8 million cars off the road for a year. “Energy efficiency and carbon reduction are central issues in the world today,” said Mike Duke, Walmart president and CEO. “We’ve been working to make a difference in these areas, both in our own footprint and our supply chain. We know that we have an opportunity to do more and the capacity to do more.” The footprint of Walmart's global supply chain is many times larger than its operational footprint and represents a more impactful opportunity to reduce emissions.

star.jpgCRO Summits provide an independent forum for CR practitioners in Governance, Risk, Compliance, Sustainability, CSR, Citizenship and Philanthropy to engage their peers on the foremost issues facing today’s Corporate Responsibility Officer

These issues include defining and measuring the CR professional, benchmarking existing standards and best practices, identifying and discussing changes in regulatory environments, and access to visionaries who will lead businesses to stronger and more sustainable futures. The CRO Summits also allow the participants a well-earned opportunity to celebrate the advancement and accomplishments attained, and honor their peers who have excelled in Corporate Responsibility personally and professionally. The Summits also allow organizations to offer thanks and recognition to many parties who are part of their success such as vendors, non profits, and educational institutions. In addition CRO Summits include expanded access for students in leading responsibility programs to witness first hand, and participate in a community beyond the reach of many of their means.

Climate change is even the new rallying cry of a resurgent nuclear power industry.

The United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has rightly taken a beating for outright errors in reporting on the topic and, worse, apparent suppression of evidence contrary to its central findings. So when I chanced upon last Friday's news from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which featured four views on "How to Fix Climate Science Reporting," - clearly focused on the IPCC - I felt it would be useful to note some highlights for our readers.
